Eviction Day for Santa Maria RV Park and Campground

It’s officially eviction day at the Santa Maria Pines Campground. As many as 150 people who lived here have been forced out.

Some people have lived here for years and are scrambling to find a new place to call home. Many of these campers say this situation is even more complicated by the lack of RV spots here on the Central Coast, paired with very few places to store them.

Javier Paz was pushing three years here at the Santa Maria Pines Campground.

“Well we got a notice that we had to vacate the premises within 28 days,” Javier Paz said, who’s being evicted.

Thursday afternoon, eviction day finally rolled around.

“It’s been really scary, really quiet, people are asking a lot of questions,” Paz said.

Paz lived and worked here as the grounds manager with his girlfriend.

“We’re left without a job and we’re left without a home, so with the housing shortage in Santa Maria it just makes it difficult,” Paz said.

Javier says if the owners want him to leave, they’re going to have to make him leave.

“It’s the Teamsters union that’s buying it, so they say and that they’re going to build a storage facility for storage stuff,” Paz said.

“I spent about 10 years in the army, couple different jobs, deployed once to Kosovo in Yugoslavia back in 99,” Army veteran Daniel Elledge said.

Daniel Elledge says with Veteran’s Day Friday, this eviction couldn’t come at a worse time.

“It happened pretty quick and we had to check out some resources, got a lot of help at the local VA here,” Elledge said.

Elledge says the VA will have a permanent place for him and his girlfriend to park their RV by December.

“It’s been a little stressful, you can see it in a lot of the other people as well you know,” Elledge said. “Some people didn’t have places to go, trying to find places to go – some of them are workers and need the place to do their jobs.”
