Carjacking and police pursuit suspect in custody

A carjacking suspect is in custody after police say he led them on a car chase and into oncoming traffic.

Police initially were called to the Channel Islands Boulevard area after a man was seen walking down the street with a rifle. While en-route police received another call saying the suspect had pointed a rifle at him and stole his vehicle near Channel Islands Boulevard and C Street.

Several officers were dispatched to the area. Just before 4:00 a.m. Tuesday officers from the Port Hueneme Police Department say they saw the vehicle and attempted to pull the driver over. The suspect fled, leading police on an approximately 15 minute chase.

The suspect ran red lights and sped through major intersections, eventually driving on the wrong side of the road into oncoming traffic on Gonzales Road, according to police. Police stopped following him at that time, but about two hours later, tips came in that a suspicious man was knocking on doors in the area.

That suspicious person was identified as Nicholas Coronado, 18, of Oxnard. Police say Coronado was positively identified as the suspect in the car jacking and police pursuit.
