Traffic slows on the 101 after drowsy driver crashes into exit sign, tree
Traffic on U.S. Route 101 near Montecito slowed down Saturday afternoon after a vehicle left the roadway and collided with an exit sign and then crashed into a tree.
At around 12:20 p.m. California Highway Patrol received a call about a blue SUV leaving the roadway and colliding into the Olive Mill exit sign on U.S. 101 near Olive Mill Road.
After hitting the sign the blue SUV traveled 50 feet off the side of the road where it crashed into a tree.
At least one person was transported to Cottage Hospital for minor injuries.
Train traffic was delayed in the area while crews responded to the scene.
The driver reported falling asleep at the wheel, causing the crash.
According to the CHP traffic log, the Olive Mill exit sign was completely destroyed.
