Paso Robles football coach suspended for taking “body shot” off player
A head football coach has been suspended. Paso Robles coach Rich Schimke is in some hot water after a video shows him doing something that some parents are calling, inappropriate.
It’s a video of Coach Schimke doing what appears to be a “body shot” off one of his football players. Earlier today we spoke with Schimke’s attorney who says it wasn’t alcohol, it was maple syrup – but it’s still got some parents riled up.
Schimke’s attorney Bob Bartosh says it was part of a “Pancake award” The student in the video had the most blocks during their October 14th victory. Bartosh says this was a one-time incident.
Paso Robles Superintendent Chris Williams says it’s important to note that whatever the outcome of this investigation is, Coach Schimke will remain a teacher here at Paso Robles High because the coaching and teaching contracts are separate.
The School District is investigating and in a statement said they’re “Concerned about what occurred. Our district takes concerns and allegations against a member of our staff seriously.”
“It’s a little weird.. taking a body shot off a kid,” parent Jesse Bundy said.
Mother Jesse Bundy is trying to put herself in the shoes of this football player’s mother.
“If it was my kid.. I’d find it kind of strange,” Bundy said.
Bundy has a two five-year-olds. Her kids will eventually be going to Paso Robles High School.
“Shocking.. I think it’s inappropriate.. but at the same time I think the kid had a say in it,” Bundy said.
Bundy says while inappropriate, she doesn’t think he should lose his coaching job over it.
“It looks like they were just celebrating, having fun,” Bundy said.
Bundy says she’s actually only heard good things about coach Schimke.
“I’ve heard that from multiple people, I keep seeing it, I’ve talked to people that love him, say he is great with the kids..so I kind of think it should be a smack on the wrist, don’t do this again,” Bundy said.
Coach Schimke was placed on administrative leave last week on the 24th. There’s no timetable for when the school will make their final decision.
