Rent at all-time highs in California, Central Coast
Rent is at an all-time high in Los Angeles County, Orange County and the Inland Empire – and it’s much the same right here on the Central Coast.
Several apartment complexes in Santa Maria report having the highest rental rates in their history because of the economy, demand and rising cost of living.
KCOY 12’s Sean Larsen spoke with an apartment complex to find out more about the rental environment right now – and also with a young man who is in between homes right now, making minimum wage, who says this is pretty rough.
31-year-old Antonio Cuevas has lived in Santa Maria for almost his entire life. Cuevas dreams of being a homeowner some day.
“You know this country is always about talking about, you know, living the dream, having what you have, you know, but they make it almost impossible to get to what you want,” renter Antonio Cuevas said.
“The rental environment is pretty competitive here in Santa Maria, there’s a high demand,” Danell Dunlap with the Hancock Terrace Apartments said.
Several apartment complexes on the Central Coast report having the highest rental rates in their history.
Some one bedrooms going for 1200, often times over 1300 dollars.
“People can sometimes struggle to pay their rent and I believe we’re seeing that as much as any other community,” Dunlap said.
“Everyone hopes to own a house one day, you know, have a home, you know, where you can raise a family, peace of mind,” Cuevas said.
The City of Santa Maria does have a Security Deposit Assistance Program offered in the city. To find out if you qualify, visit: http://cityofsantamaria.org/home/components/news/news/2778/18
