Closing arguments happen in the trial of Santa Maria teen
The defense and the prosecution battled back and forth in court today during their closing arguments.
Maribel sat just feet away from her parents, barely making any eye contact with them.
During the arguments she kept her head down for the most part, exchanging very little to no words with her defense attorney.
During the prosecution’s argument they said Maribel killed her baby with intent and deliberation. She says she “made the worst decision a mom can make and that’s to kill her child,” says Prosecutor Jennifer Karapetian.
Karapetian was deliberate in her wording while making her points to the judge saying she wanted the court to find Maribel guilty of first degree murder.
Maribel S.’s attorney discredited many of the prosecution’s points.
Lea Villegas became very emotional, she used this as a chance to paint a picture in the judge’s mind of what Maribel must have gone through when she gave birth.
She says she must have felt a sense of panic, terror and fear saying this would have impaired her ability to problem solve.
She also gave a timeline of how Maribel was in her bathroom giving birth and the motions and actions she did immediately after. She is asking the judge if criminal intent is found to find Maribel guilty of involuntary manslaughter. The judge is expected to come down with his verdict on Friday.
