Truck hits Caltrans trailer on Hwy 101 in Carpinteria

A pickup truck collided with Caltrans equipment early Thursday morning on Highway 101 northbound through Carpinteria.

The accident was first reported by the California Highway Patrol around 2:45 a.m. near Santa Monica Road. Witnesses driving by the accident say a large pickup truck stuck a Caltrans trailer in the “cone zone” and caused significant damage to the trailer and pickup.

The driver of the pickup truck was taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. The extent of their injuries are not known.

It doesn’t appear any Caltrans workers were injured in the incident.

Traffic was already down to one lane for the overnight road work and the accident had slowed things even more as cleanup crews work to get the pickup truck and Caltrans trailer out of lanes.

All lanes were back open by 5 a.m.
