Driver in two-vehicle crash on Carrillo arrested for DUI

An Arizona woman was arrested for her part in a two-vehicle crash that closed parts of Carrillo Street in Santa Barbara Tuesday evening.

Kaleigh McKerson, 27, of Scottsdale, AZ, was driving a Volkswagen Jetta on Carrillo Street when her vehicle drifted into oncoming traffic and struck a Silver SUV waiting to turn left.

McKerson was given a sobriety test at the scene. Her breath test registered a .16 blood alcohol content, which is twice the legal limit in the state of California.

McKerson was arrested on scene and faces a possible charge for Felony DUI resulting in injury. She is being held at Santa Barbara County Jail on $100,000 bond.

The driver of the silver SUV has been identified as Santa Barbara resident Kathryn Organ, 64. She was taken to the hospital where she remains as of Thursday evening.

Organ’s dog was sitting in her lap at the time of the crash. The dog died as a result of the crash.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department would like to remind the public to restrain any pets that ride in the vehicle with their owners.

A two-vehicle accident closed parts of Carrillo Street near the intersection with Miramonte Road Wednesday evening.

The crash happened shortly after 6:45 p.m.

According to a reporter on scene, police, AMR and Santa Barbara County Fire Department responded to the scene of the crash.

The female driver of an SUV appeared to suffer minor to moderate injuries, she was taken away in an ambulance.

The female driver of a Volkswagen did not suffer major injuries but appeared to be distressed.

According to a Fire Captain on scene, the driver of the SUV had a dog in the vehicle. The dog suffered what appeared to be serious injuries.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department would like to remind the public to restrain any pets that ride in the vehicle with their owners.

It is unclear if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
