Local candidates clash over Trump comments

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s inflammatory remarks about women released earlier this week in a recording are creating a divide in our local congressional race.

On October 7, 24th congressional district republican candidate Justin Fareed called Donald Trumps comments “disgusting and inexcusable” on Facebook. Just a day later, his democratic opponent Salud Carbajal tweeted that he believes Fareed needs to publicly call for Trump to step down as his party’s candidate.

While Fareed has not done so, he has released a statement saying he never endorsed Trump or any other candidate for president as part of his campaign. This comes after reports surfaced that he endorsed the reality TV star in an interview with the Montecito Journal in June.

“I think it’s despicable what’s happening on both sides on the top of the ticket,” he said Sunday in Goleta. “I have not endorsed any presidential candidate for this campaign.

“How can he stand up for women, minorities, our community in Washington, when he cannot stand up against Donald Trump?” says Carbajal.
