Police say excessive alcohol and speed linked to triple fatal Santa Barbara crash

Santa Barbara Police say a triple fatal accident on Cliff Drive August 9, was linked to an excessively drunk driver and a vehicle going over 90 miles an hour into a curve on a 40 mile an hour street.

24 year old Angel Flores was behind the wheel of the sedan that ended up mangled after hitting a curb, trees, boulders, a power pole and a tree. He died at the scene along with 28 year old Benjamin Rubio, and 19 year old Daniella Hearn.

They were in a Lexus Sedan heading from the top of the mesa towards the waterfront. The accident occurred near the intersection of La Marina.

Police investigators used toxicology tests on the driver, and special technological equipment about the vehicle’s speed to complete the report. Sgt. Riley Harwood says, with the information they can make “a computer -plot of the accident scene and from there making calculation that give insight as to things like, how fast the car was traveling and the direction of travel at what the direction of travel was at different points of impact.”

There are still notes, and flowers at the accident scene. “Sadly this is an example of three deaths that could have been prevented if someone had not been drunk driving,” said Harwood.
