New fire breaks out at Vandenberg Air Force Base

LATEST UPDATE

[5:00 p.m.] The Airfield Road Fire has now scorched about 100 acres, according to the latest information from Santa Barbara County Fire Capt. Dave Zaniboni. He says heavy winds are driving this fire, which remains out of control, and moving in a southern direction.

Several fire agencies throughout Santa Barbara County are on scene assisting with the Airfield Road Fire, including six engines from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

Several structures are threatened by the fire. Fire trucks are stationed at those buildings to protect them from flames. Currently, the fire is contained to the Vandenberg Air Force Base property.

[4:25 p.m.] In a preliminary report, Vandenberg Air Force Base officials attribute the cause of the Airfield Road Fire to a downed powerline due to the high winds in the area.

Resources from the Canyon Fire have been diverted to fight the Airfield Road Fire. All inbound traffic to the Base is closed.

NEW WILDFIRE SPARKS AT VANDENBERG AFB

A new fire broke out at Vandenberg Air Force Base at about 2 p.m. Thursday.

Vandenberg Air Force Base put out a statement on their Facebook page announcing a small brush fire that sparked on North Base.

This fire is not related to the Canyon Fire currently burning on South Base.

Base officials say there is no risk to personnel at this time. Our news crews are reporting seeing a lot of smoke in nearby Lompoc.
