Gauchos Super Fan Phil Womble Turns 80

UCSB’s #1 fan is now 80 years old and still going strong.

The Gauchos and his friends threw Phil Womble an 80th birthday party on Sunday at a place where he is always celebrated, The Phil Womble Hall of Champions,” located in UCSB’s Intercollegiate Athletics Building.

Former athletes and coaches gathered to take pictures and tell stories with Phil Womble who was born with cerebral palsy. But CP has not stopped Womble from supporting UCSB for 47 years.

Womble gave a speech that paid tribute to his late parents, and his friends saying they were more valuable than money. Of course Womble ended his talk with his signature phrase, “Go Gauchos.”

Womble is in the UCSB Hall of Fame plus several more including the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Hall of Fame.
