Big Rig Crash in Santa Maria Causes Road Closure

A Santa Maria crash involving a semitrailer hauling a load of strawberries injured two people Wednesday afternoon.

Santa Barbara County Fire spokesperson Mike Eliason said two of the three semitrailer occupants were taken to Marian Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. The third person refused medical treatment and was not taken to the hospital.

The crash occurred at about 1:46 p.m. near the area of Main Street and Philbric Road. The California Highway Patrol reports that the semitrailer overturned on its side blocking the eastbound and westbound lanes.

The strawberries it the vehicle was hauling did not spill onto the roadway. However, about 15 gallons of diesel fuel, and some oil were spilled onto the roadway according to Eliason. Crews worked to quickly clean the diesel and oil from the roadway.

No further details were immediately known. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.
