Hundreds Hit the Road Back Home From Their Labor Day Weekend Plans

Brett Archer and his family are hitting the road early today to head back home.

“That’s why we left early on Thursday and we are leaving early to head back home to avoid any traffic,” he says.

Like hundreds of people on the Central Coast they are wrapping up their Labor Day plans. They spent the weekend at Pismo Beach.

“We stayed around, we hung out, stayed on the sand dunes, we have a Volkswagen took it out on the dunes, looked at RVs, just played tourist,” says Archer.

Triple A reports that people were willing to travel more this summer due to lower gas prices. It’s something that Archer is taking advantage of, “we are driving a motor home like this not real great on gas mileage so we are taking advantage of the lower prices.”

Triple A is also saying that this weekend is one of the least traveled holidays. For California Highway Patrol officers it’s been a busy weekend.

“The Freeway has been unusually busy this weekend there is no doubt about that,” says Officer Craig Carrier.

He says he’s looking out for people who are drinking and driving or might be distracted on their cell phones.

“We are looking out for DUI driving, people tailgating, speeders, unsafe lane changes, and also electronic devices we are looking for people who are texting and talking on their phones,” he says.

He says last year during this weekend there were more than 30 people who died throughout the state of California, many of them because they weren’t buckled in properly.

He says his piece of advice is for people to take it slow on the road.

“When you are going to travel on a holiday weekend there is no need for a hurry when you do that, that’s when bad things happen.”

Officer Carrier says extra officers are on patrol for the holiday weekend to make sure everyone is driving safely.
