Neighbors Collect Signatures Against Channel Islands Harbor Development
Some Silverstrand residents spend part of the Labor Day weekend collecting signatures.
They set up a table and signs near Kiddie Beach along Victoria Avenue.
They want to bring their fight against a proposed development to the California Coastal Commission.
The development, approved unanimously by Ventura County Supervisors, gives developers the right to build 390 luxury apartments in return for the redevelopment of the rundown Fisherman’s Wharf shopping area on the corner of Victoria and Channel Islands Boulevard in the Channel Islands Harbor.
The apartment complex would take the four acre space currently used as for boat launch ramp parking.
Critics with the Western Alliance for Nature compared it to leasing public land for private profit.
They are concerned traffic will hurt their quality of life and safety.
The Coastal Commission could take up the issue this fall.
