City of Santa Maria recycling mattresses for free for all California residents
SANTA MARIA, Calif.
If you have an old mattress that you want to get rid of, the City of Santa Maria is urging you to recycle it.
This state-wide program is completely free to California residents. On average the city takes in about 400 mattresses a month that all end up in the ground. Now with this program you can bring up to five mattresses or box springs that will be recycled at the Santa Maria Regional Landfill for free.
They’re averaging about 1000 recycled mattresses a month since the program kicked off July 1st . Over 80 percent of each mattress is recyclable and can be transformed into other useful products.
As you can imagine, mattresses are very difficult to compact and dispose of because of the coil springs and can take over 50 years to biodegrade.
Businesses are not eligible for the free mattress recycling.
“The Mattress Recycling Act of 2013 is on the books and the City of Santa Maria is very pleased that we were able to make a deal with a mattress recycler locally to dispose of the large number of mattresses that otherwise would’ve been buried in this landfill,” Mark van de Kamp with the City of Santa Maria said.
Some items that are not part of the free recycling include waterbeds, futons, sofa beds and air mattresses. The landfill is open everyday from 7 am to 4 pm.
