Santa Barbara Mesa Residents Take A Stand Against Speeding

Some Santa Barbara Mesa residents are fed up with speeding on Cliff Drive and they want drivers to slow down before someone gets hurt.

“I see a lot of near misses. I see people crossing the street and almost getting hit. It’s hairy. It’s very hairy,” said resident Angela Bell.

Bell and several other residents held up signs on Cliff Drive on Saturday.

The protest comes a few weeks after three people died in a crash on Cliff Drive. Speed may have been a factor, but the cause is still under investigation.

Bell said some residents want a crosswalk, a stop sign or a signal somewhere along the one mile stretch of road.

“We have four lanes of traffic and we have not a crosswalk between Meigs Drive and Loma Alta. There is no way to cross this street safely,” Bell said.

Cliff Drive used to be a state highway until it became a city street in 2014.

Bell plans to take her concerns before the city council.
