Police Arrest Arroyo Grande Man in Grover Beach Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash

A woman was killed, another man critically injured in a hit and run accident last night in Grover Beach.

The hit and run accident happened just before 10 last night . Investigators say two people were crossing the crosswalk when they were struck. Police say that suspect then fled the area and was found and arrested about six hours later.

“It’s insane to me, where’s the humanity? You know, I mean what’s going on,” eyewitness Zach James said.

Eyewitness Zach James was one of the first on the scene of a deadly hit-and-run Saturday night.

“There was cops, sheriff, ambulance, firefighters, we were wondering what was going on so we walked down to the corner and it was just chaos,” James said.

He says the intersection at Seventh and Grand Avenue in Grover Beach is prone to accidents.

“You do see close calls every now and again, actually had a buddy who was hit by a car on a bike and got injured pretty good, a couple years back so it happens more often than you’d think..scary,” James said.

James says there might be a remedy for this intersection.

“Maybe a light or you know up on Fourth street and Atlantic they have a, blinking crosswalk, something like that, anything really because this is a pretty busy intersection right here,” James said.

Grover Beach Police say around 9:55 Saturday night, a man and a woman were crossing the street when they were struck by a grey sedan. The woman was killed, the man is still in critical condition. Police say the driver, 20-year-old Zachary David Diaz of Arroyo Grande, fled the scene – but eyewitnesses helped them track down Diaz and his car just before 4 a-m Sunday in Arroyo Grande.

“His parents are really good people, he’s a really good kid,” Robert Sorenson said, who’s a friend of one of the victims.

Robert Sorenson says he’s a good friend of the man who’s in critical condition.

“I needed a blanket one night man, I was really cold..and he gave me a blanket and that was really awesome and I brought it back to him the next day,” Sorenson said.

Diaz was booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail on Felony charges of Vehicular manslaughter and Hit and run causing injury or death.

“Stay safe out here, it’s crazy, people are hitting people and running away so stay safe, vigalent,” James said.

The identities of the two victims have not yet been released.
It’s still under investigation whether drugs or alcohol played a factor.
