Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputies Violently Attacked During Arrest
Two Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputies have been released from Cottage Hospital after authorities say they were injured during a violent attack by a burglary suspect in Carpinteria Saturday morning.
The incident began when deputies were dispatched to the 1200 block of Franciscan Court for a report of a subject burglarizing a vehicle. When they arrived on scene, deputies say the suspect, later identified as 33-year-old Sage Wyttenberg, fled towards Via Real. Wyttenberg was located hiding in a creek bed.
Authorities say Wyttenberg appeared to be under the influence of stimulants. Deputies found a plethora of stolen items and the suspect was placed under arrest.
Investigators say Wyttenberg struck deputies with a pipe and a metal fan while trying to escape from deputies after his arrest.
Deputies say Wyttenberg managed to slip his handcuffs in front of him on three different occasions during the transport to Santa Barbara County Jail. When deputies tried to restrain him on the third occasion, Wyttenberg allegedly charged out of the patrol car and that’s when the violent attack occurred.
Authorities say they deployed a Taser and impact weapons after he attacked them, but that he continued to resist arrest. Additional deputies arrived and restrained him.
The two attacked deputies and Wyttenberg were briefly hospitalized with multiple injuries. Wyttenberg was later booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail with bail set at $500,000. He faces charges of possession of stolen property, escape, residential and vehicle burglary, possession of burglary tools, battery on a peace officer, and resisting arrest with injury.
A relative of Wyttenberg contacted Sunday declined to comment. Authorities identified multiple victims in the city of Carpinteria through the investigation.
