88-Year-Old Orcutt Resident Receives Outpouring of Support After She Says She Got Scammed

WATCH KCOY 12: 88-Year-Old Orcutt Resident Receives Outpouring of Support After She Says She Got Scammed

ORCUTT, Calif.

In the last 24 hours since her story first aired on KCOY 12, 88-year-old Orcutt resident Fayetta Niss has received an outpouring of support following her ordeal with two men that she says scammed her out of $700. A sum she says was her savings for her taxes this year.

“I only get $709 a month to live on so it really hurt,” Niss said.

She said two men came to her door and told her she was in desperate need of a driveway repair, but ended up only spraying down a black rubberized gunk on the driveway instead of doing any real repairs or fix any cracks, just took her money.

After KCOY 12 Thursday’s 5 p.m. newscast, an anonymous woman came to Niss’ door, who said she saw the newscast and wanted to help. She found Niss’ name and address in the phone book and came by to write her a $700 check to help her out.

Since then, our newsroom has been flooded with calls from caring residents throughout the Central Coast who want to help Niss.

Dorothy Gomez drove from Atascadero to Niss’ home in Orcutt Friday afternoon to surprise Niss with a check she says was the least she could do.

In the last hour, a local contractor called our newsroom to let us know he wanted to repair Niss’ driveway for free.

Niss is very appreciative with the community, but is insistent that she did not share her story to receive money. She says she hopes by sharing her story, it will spare others from falling for the same or similar scams.

Reporter Sean Larsen visited Niss on Friday, and our cameras were there to capture the moment when Gomez makes a surprise stop with a heartfelt gift. Watch the attached video to see Niss’ reaction.
