10 Year Anniversary for Spencer the Gardener at Casa Cantina
A favorite Santa Barbara band for Fiesta music, Spencer the Gardener, celebrated its tenth anniversary at Casa Cantina downtown last night with a live appearance on the NewsChannel 3 11 p.m. newscast.
Calling the event the officials “unofficial” opening for Fiesta, Spencer Barnitz and his band played many danceable favorites. They mix original songs, a surf and Mexican blend, covers and audience sing a longs.
They often transition from “Hey Baby Que Paso?” by the Texas Tornados to “I Will Survive,” a 1978 Gloria Gaynor hit.
The Casa Cantina is a separate location near the downtown De La Guerra Mercado with a small cover charge. It is also a location where beer is served. The Old Spanish Days plaza nearby is alcohol free.
Wednesday night the show went until midnight which creates an extended entertainment period for the plaza which shuts down the mercado stage and food booths at 11 p.m.
Among the added surprises for those attending included performances during the band break by the La Boheme dancers who have made multiple appearances at top city events this year including the Solstice Parade, Concerts in the Park and Fiesta.
