Swim Lessons Could Save Your Child’s Life
As summer winds down, swim lessons should not follow suit.
That’s the advice from swim instructor Wendy Fereday.
She is the owner of the Wendy Fereday Swim School operating out of the Vista Del Monte Aquatic Center in Santa Barbara.
Fereday has spent 40 years in the pool teaching children how to swim.
Some of the children start swimming around 4 months old.
“The babies learn very quickly. It’s a natural love for them to learn to swim. Their breath control is amazing,” Fereday said. “Before they are walking, we have them swimming. We have them holding on to the wall, pulling themselves up, and we have them turning around and saving themselves.”
Fereday said consistency and year-round lessons are important.
“A child can forget up to three years of age. If they’ve been in an infant program and some reason the parent stops, It’s pretty much a wash and they start over as a non-swimmer,” Fereday said.
