Portion of Highway 33 Dedicated to Fallen Deputy
The County of Ventura has honored a fallen Sheriff’s deputy by dedicating a portion of state Route 33 from Ojai Avenue to Fairview Road in his name. Ventura County Sheriff’s Deputy Peter Aguirre Jr. was killed in the line of duty on July 17, 1996.
Deputy Aguirre was investigating a domestic disturbance report in the Ojai Valley community of Meiners Oaks when he was shot and killed by a man identified as Michael Raymond Johnson.
Johnson was wounded by Aguirre’s partner at the time according to to accounts from 1996, and is not currently on California’s death row.
Deputy Aguirre is survived by his wife and daughter.
This stretch of highway will be known as “Ventura County Deputy Sheriff Peter Aguirre, Jr. Memorial Highway.”
Gov. Jerry Brown signed Assembly Resolution 142 (ACR-142) to dedicate this portion of Highway 33 in honor of the fallen deputy.
