Seatbelts Save Lives On Memorial Day In Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara City Fire Capt. Mike Hoose credits seat belts for saving drivers and passengers involved in a four-car crash around 9:08 p.m. on Memorial Day.

The accident occurred on the northbound 101 just past the Castillo on ramp.

Two white compact cars went off the freeway and down an embankment, one rolled over before hitting a tree.

A bed of Ivy may have lessened the impact, but California Highway Patrol officers and firefighters say seat belts made the difference.

One family holding a baby in a car seat walked off the on ramp and waited in the parking lot of the DMV to talk to investigators.

Traffic was back to normal by about 10:30 p.m.
