i Madonnari Festival Leaves Lasting Impression In Santa Barbara

Fog and drizzle put a damper on the pastels used by i Madonnari artists when they began on Friday night, but by Memorial Day their works of art looked like masterpieces.

More than 150 artists were chosen to take part in the 30th annual i Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival in front of the Old Mission in Santa Barbara. They volunteered their time and talent. Many from out of town were given room and board during their stay in Santa Barbara.

Cecelia Linayao was the featured artist with a Madonna and child on display beneath the steps of the Mission. The San Diego artist said this was her tenth year as a participant. She compared it to performance art with visitors watching her work.

Artist Jesus Manzo of Santa Barbara had a spot by the fountain. Manzo said this was his 8th year.

Artist Tracy Lee Stum said people with short attention spans like to use pastel chalk because it allows artists to make large images quickly. She collaborated with other artists to draw endangered species in the center of the plaza.

Children took part too, and may end up having their own sponsored squares someday.

All the money raised goes to the Children’s Creative Project to fund art and performances at more than 100 schools.

As long as rain doesn’t wash the artwork away, it will remain on display.
