Firefighters Urge Residents to be Ready for Serious Fire Season

LOMPOC, Calif. – Nearly two years later, it may be hard to tell that a wildfire spanning hundreds of acres burned the hills along Miguelito Canyon Road.

“The trees went up like match sticks, I had no idea that something could happen so fast,” says Geri Zavala.

Her home sits just across the hills were the fire happened. It came feet away from her home.

“The fire remained even through the night it was very scary in the evening because we are trying to go to sleep but you can still hear all of the crackling of the hills going on”, she says.

Homeowners living right across from where the fire sparked remember having to evacuate their homes because of the Miguelito fire in May 2014. They say if you take a look now you can see how green the hills are once again with all of the trees and brush that has grown back.

“Its amazing to me know, two years later that the hills are as green as they are with as little rain as we have gotten,” says Zavala.

Some residents say since the fire happened, they make sure to have a plan in place in case anything like that were to happen again.

They say they think of the most valuable things they would need to take with them if they needed to quickly evacuate.

Fire officials urge residents to refer to the “ready, set, go” program. The program provides tips that they could use during wildfire season.

Officials also ask homeowners to keep 100 feet of space around their homes, to give crews space to fight a fire if one were to break out.
