Sand-Covered Benches Dug Out By Volunteers

Recent storms didn’t bring much rain, but they did push around plenty of sand.

Sand buried the sidewalk and memorial benches at Ed Hunt Rehab Point near Oxnard Beach Park and Embassy Suites.

The area, built in the 1990s, offers beach access to people with physical challenges. It is named after a late World War II veteran who suffered a stroke.

When Oxnard Police Explorers heard about the sand, they decided to pick up shovels

Eric Salinas spent much of the weekend clearing the path and the benches.

His father, Cmdr. Andrew Salinas said they had a little help from heavy equipment donated by Caterpillar of Oxnard.

Beachgoers are thankful for their progress.

“They are doing a great job, I’ve been watching them for two days now, digging out all this sand. It is a huge undertaking. Thank goodness they are doing it.,” said resident Mary Flynn.

Visitors can once again read some of the plaques dedicated to loved ones on the benches.

But there is still more digging out to do.
