Goleta Mother Gives Birth To Leap Year Baby

Two special Leap Year births Monday at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

The Hernandez family from Goleta allowed the media into their hospital room to meet their newborn baby girl, Mia. (The other local family with a Leap Day baby was camera shy.)

Little Mia Hernandez came into the world at 8:53 a.m., weighing in at 6 pounds, 6 ounces.

Her proud parents, Sandra and Roberto, had a room full of cameras and told members of the media what it’s like being one of the top stories of the day.

“It’s a weird sensation,” said Sandra Hernandez. “I don’t know how to explain it but you know, I guess I feel emotional right now for the baby. It’s a very special day for me, so it makes it even more special that she’s one of the lucky ones.”

Sandra went into labor at 3 a.m. and labored for less than six hours.

February 29 comes around every four years, on what is known as Leap Year. Most years, February has only 28 days. During those years, Mia will celebrate her birthday on March 1.

Maria Zate, public relations manager at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, told NewsChannel 3 that a third local woman was also in labor. If her baby is born before midnight, it will become the third local Leap Year baby.
