Morro Bay Business Damaged After Prank Call

The Burger King on Quintana Road in Morro Bay was damaged late Saturday night after a reported prank call made employees believe the business was experiencing a gas leak.

Emergency officials from the Morro Bay public safety team, fire department, and police, responded to the possible gas leak only to discover “major damage” to the business. There was no gas leak.

Burger King employees told investigators that they received a call from someone claiming to be a representative from the Morro Bay Fire Department who said windows needed to be broken to ventilate the business due to a gas leak. The employees allegedly complied.

No arrests have been made.

This incident is being investigated by the Morro Bay Police Department. Anyone with information that can assist investigators is asked to call the department at 805-772-6225.

Officials want to remind the public that the fire department does not call a business directly to warn of a issue like this. If you receive a call believed to be from a public safety agency that seems strange in nature or causes you to fear for your safety, call 911 immediately to verify the information is valid.
