Former Atascadero State Hospital Patient Found Guilty of Murder

A man accused of killing a fellow patient at Atascadero State Hospital in May 2014 was found guilty of first degree murder based on his plea of “No Contest” to the charge. The San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s office announced Thursday.

35-year-old Adam Paul Cary faces 25 years-to-life in prison for the murder of Kevin Allan Turner.

The murder occurred on May 28, 2014 when Cary strangled Turner, his roommate at the time, while he was asleep. Cary also injured a hospital worker in the incident.

Cary had been previously found incompetent to stand trial, but criminal proceedings went forward when he was found to be restored to competency on December 1st of this year.

Sentencing is scheduled for January 21, 2016.
