Santa Barbara High Students Prepare Hundreds Of Tax Returns

Hundreds of people counted on teens to help them do their taxes.

It’s something Santa Barbara High School students have been doing for more than two decades.

Every Thursday students have been hosting a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program at the Dons Net Cafe.

The students have been certified by the Internal Revenue Service and a few of them have passed the IRS’ highest test.

This year they helped 500 people prepare their taxes.

VITA coordinator Henry Almengor said about $2 million will be returned to members of the community.

Almengor said some students turn their knowledge into careers.

He plans to continue volunteering when he attends Santa Barbara City College next year.
