Mister Spock’s Vulcan Greeting Still Going Strong

The Boston-born son of Orthodox Jews used the single-hand version to create a Vulcan greeting. In a recent interview, he explained that shin is the first letter in Shalom.

People seem to know it goes with the “Star Trek” saying, “Live long and prosper.”

The symbol took off publicly during the original “Star Trek”television series, which ran from 1966 to 1969. Trekkies and others still use it as a greeting today.

Nimoy,83, died in Bel Air, California. of complications due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He had blamed smoking for his ailment.
