Some Grocers Scramble To Stock Eggs
Hens at Fairview Gardens appear to have it made. They roam freely around their hen house during the day and they aren’t cooped up at night.
A voter-approved law took effect on Jan. 1 that changes the way hens are treated throughout the state and in some parts of the country.
All farmers who sell eggs in California must allow hens to have room to move and stretch their wings.
Farmers in cold climates said it is going to cost them and consumers more.
But some customers said a price hike won’t make them fly the coop.
Organic egg lovers like Rebecca Hudson are willing to pay up to $8 a dozen. She said people should do a taste test. She believe hens that are treated more humanely produce better tasting eggs.
Analysts expect the average dozen to cost about 30 cents more.
