Local Priest Reacts To Pope’s Criticism Of Vatican Clergy

It came in a Christmas greeting that turned into a lecture on what Pope Francis calls bad behavior by Vatican leaders.

Father Larry Gosselin of the Old Mission Santa Barbara says the pope’s blistering critique of Vatican clergy is another great moment for his papacy.

“He’s showing us the conversion has to be from the very top to the very bottom,” Father Larry said.

In his Christmas address to cardinals, bishops and priests Monday, the pope blasted them for gossiping, materialism and for leading hidden lives.

“Our priests are human just like you and I, and so are all of our religious leaders. They all make mistakes and they need to know that,” said Santa Barbara resident Pat Wotruba.

Pope Francis also accused Vatican officials of suffering from “spiritual Alzheimer’s” by forgetting their purpose and vocation.

“The Pope’s message is very clear. He wants the church to be on the side of the poor and those who are disenfranchised. That’s why he instructed the cardinals that they have to be out with the people, they have to know the people and they can’t see themselves above the people on any conditions,” Father Larry said.

Some believe the pope’s harsh criticism is setting the stage for sweeping reforms in the new year.
