Former Lois Capps Aide Appears in PSA Videos
For the first time since his sentencing, we’re hearing from Ramond Morua, the former congressional aide behind the DUI crash that killed 27-year-old Mallory Dies.
Morua appears in four new Public Service Announcements, released Friday, as part of his sentencing.
Congresswoman Lois Capps said she has not seen the PSA’s yet. But, in a statement Capps said, “Any reminders of the consequences of drinking and driving is a benefit to our community, especially around the holidays.”
Several other PSA videos are set to be released in February.
In the PSA’s, Morua expresses remorse and regret for killing Dies.
On Dec. 6, 2013, Morua drove drunk and hit Dies while she crossed the street.
She died five days later.
A judge sentenced Morua to 20 years to life in prison. Part of the sentence included the promise from Morua to film several PSA’s on the dangers of drinking and driving.
Matt Schuster of TV Santa Barbara, produced the commercials. “It was tough. His demeanor actually surprised me. He was very remorseful and very emotional,” said Schuster.
The PSA’s were made for the Vow4Mal Foundation aimed at preventing future DUI tragedies. Dies’ mother also appears in the commercials.
The family is inviting the public to gather at the scene of the accident on Anacapa and Haley streets at 4 p.m., Saturday on the one-year anniversary of her death to remember Mallory’s life.
