Special Olympics Games Held in Santa Maria
Ask eighth grade student, Noe Ramirez, which Special Olympics game is his favorite he’ll tell you, there are two.
“The obstacle course and races,” said Ramirez.
Another student, Elijah Tell, also took part in the Special Olympics that were held at Santa Maria High School.
Elijah said he likes to compete in these games.
“I like all of them,” said Elijah.
The two boys joined about one hundred and sixty other students from various schools.
“They train you know, for about a month out here to get ready for the competition,” said Santa Barbara County, Special Olympics Coordinator, Rudy Gutierrez.
Included in today’s competitions were Frisbee throws and relay races.
“It’s interesting seeing them play and have fun and not just inside a classroom,” said Mayra Sanchez.
Sanchez is a Senior at Santa Maria High and volunteered to help out in today’s games.
In the end, students shared hugs, smiles and plenty of high fives.
“A great chance for them to come out and show everybody that they can do everything just like everyone else,” said Gutierrez.
The students also added that they can’t wait to participate in the Special Olympics next year.
