Democrats Make Last-Minute Donation to Capps Race

U.S. Rep. Lois Capps called the Democratic Congressional Committee (DCCC) on Monday as she walked Isla Vista precincts, where UCSB students reside.

Capps said she didn’t ask for the recent funding she received from the DCCC but she said they are buying advertising.

The committee spent $99,000 on last-minute radio ads. Media must charge their lowest ad rate for political ads, but the number of ads the money could buy would vary from station to station.

The infusion of money into the race received national media attention from The New York Times and Politico, both noting the contributions into a race that was until recently considered safe for the Democratic incumbent.

Capps said her focus was getting the vote out in Isla Vista where she had help from Richard Martinez. Martinez is the father of Christopher Michaels-Martinez, who was killed in the Isla Vista Massacre in May.

Chris Mitchum is getting help from volunteers who said they like the fact that the race is getting national attention. They said money is flowing in from grassroots donors who believe in Mitchum’s more conservative message.
