Local Firefighters Go Beyond the Call of Duty to Help Injured Woman
Two Santa Barbara City Firefighters went beyond the call of duty to help an elderly woman who tripped and fell in the front yard of her Mesa home.
Captain Kevin Bryant and crew from Fire Station 6 responded to the call for help.
The 81-year-old broke her arm and badly injured her shoulder in the fall.
Bryant says there wasn’t a clear path to her front door.
“We felt at that time, that if the walkway had not been so narrow she might not have fallen,” Bryant said.
Bryant decided the overgrown shrubs needed a trim.
While the woman was in the hospital undergoing surgery, Bryant returned to her home with fellow firefighter Tyler Smith.
“We just felt we could help this woman avoid a future fall and do a little customer service,” Bryant said.
Together the firefighters cleared the path to her door. In about an hour, they filled up three trash bags.
“That’s why we’re all here. We’re all here to serve the public. Usually, we do that in emergency situations. But, this is one of those times we were able to do it it another way,” Smith said.
The woman is recovering at home and tells KEYT/KCOY/KKFX that she is grateful for their act of kindness.
The firefighters wish her well and say they will be there for her again if she needs them.
“I hope that she’s healing well and rapidly, and you know were glad to help anytime she calls,” Bryant said.
