Firefighters Fight 11 Acre Fire in Nipomo

Cal Fire was called out to the intersection of Scenic View Way and Camino Mariposa in Nipomo Sunday around 1:30 p.m.

Phil Veneris, Cal Fire battalion chief, said, “This is one of the last large eucalyptus groves in the area, the last large fire we had here was in 1994.”

Veneris said the fire led to at least 15 spot fires throughout the area, adding up to around 11 acres.

The fire was contained Sunday and didn’t damage any homes.

Firefighters said what made battling the blaze challenging is that the Eucalyptus trees were badly damaged from frost last winter and left very dry throughout the summer.

San Luis Obispo does not have red flag warnings, however, firefighters do say the county is still hot,dry and dangerous. Also, the winds were shifting back and forth inland creating a challenge.

Firefighters were expected to stay in the area through midnight and return on Monday. People in Nipomo could see smoke on Sunday but firefighters say they shouldn’t be alarmed, because containing the blaze will take time.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
