RJ Frank Middle School Remembers 9/11
RJ Frank middle school in Oxnard has a special connection in honoring the victims of 9/11.
Back in 2001 many of the students and facility from the junior high school were looking forward to meeting their new friends from Washington D.C. Unfortunately those friends were passengers on American Airlines Flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon.
“Students here were expecting their arrival and to their surprise as they were watching the news they learned about the tragedy. They realized that it was their future friends that were on that flight 77 that crashed into the Pentagon. It was friends that they never got to meet,” said Maria Elena Plaza, Oxnard School District public information officer.
Thursday morning students, teachers, and the community gathered for what has become an annual ceremony. Two people from the National Geographic Society, as well as three teachers from Washington D.C. and three sixth-grade students were all killed.
They never finished their trip for a research project in the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary.
