Former Westmont VP Passes Away From ALS

A former vice president for student life and dean of students at Westmont College lost her battle with ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease over the weekend.

Jane Higa retired a year ago after 24 years at Westmont. She was the longest-serving vice president in the college history.

You may recall we featured a video in her honor a few weeks ago as part of the ice bucket challenge.

Westmont’s president, 10 faculty and staff members and even Higa’s husband took part in the challenge to raise awareness of ALS on her behalf. She was 63 years old.

Husband Jim Mannoia said a memorial service will be held this Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Santa Barbara Community Church.

He said the public is welcome to attend and celebrate his wife.
