Immigration Battle Over Border Children Hits Home
More than 50,000 children have crossed the U.S. border illegally without an adult or parent since October.
Some of the children are being cared for in temporary housing at Naval Base Ventura County in Port Hueneme.
Monday, President Obama placed some of the blame on a law passed under the former Bush administration in 2002.
The law was intended to deal with human trafficking, but it was extended in 2008 and included wording that prevents undocumented immigrant children from being sent back to their home country automatically if they would return to a dangerous situation.
Obama also requested $2 billion to pay for temporary housing and to prevent more children from making it over the border illegally.
Critics have said they blame the immigration policy under Obama’s leadership.
