Record Number of Freshmen Arrive at Cal Poly

Cal Poly is welcoming a record number of freshman this fall.

The University enrolled 4,750 first-time freshmen, an increase of 28 percent.

A record 1,000 transfer students are enrolled too.

For the first time in history, the Fall Welcome took place in Alex G. Spanos Memorial Stadium.

Students watched a video showing highlights of WOW, which stands for Week of Welcome.

Upperclassman led small groups of WOW students from their residence halls to their seats.

Speakers included President Jeffrey Armstrong, ASI student President Jason Colombini and special guest Paul Wesselmann, also known as the Ripple Guy.

Wesselmann invited the students to rip up their imaginary cool card and get involved in everything the university has to offer.

Through Sunday students are invited to a-Mustang soccer game, laser tag, a resource fair and a surprise tradition called a WOW-A-RAMA.

One senior said the only hitch so far was a water main break that cut off hot water. The problem is supposed to be fixed by morning.

Classes start Monday.
