Vegetation fire burns small area near La Mesa park

Investigators are looking into the cause of a small brush fire on the Santa Barbara Mesa.

Santa Barbara City Fire responded to a call just after 3:30 a.m. Friday morning in the 200 block of Meigs Road near Shoreline Drive.

The fire burned a vegetation in a creek bed near the popular park.

Crews were able to quickly knock down the fire using water and a special foam.

No homes were damaged and there were no reports of any injuries.

The cause remains under investigation.

Neighbors say the area is well traveled, sometimes by the homeless where camps have been seen from time to time.

Captain Gary Pitney said, “Were there power lines? Were there people in the area that saw someone smoking or doing something of a suspicious nature?”

One resident said she wasn’t surprised by the fire because she has seen people loitering outside of the main park area.

“I do know people live in this area. I was shocked to see that they had started a fire,” said Martha Angel.

Police also responded to a house alarm call in the same area of the creek, where a resident believed a suspicious person may have come through a gate.
