Artichoke named official state vegetable
The artichoke is now the official vegetable of California.
The state recently gave the stout green vegetable the special distinction.
In the Northern California city of Castroville, 5000 acres of artichokes are grown annually.
Overall 99 percent of all the artichokes in the U.S. are grown in California.
Nutritionists say artichokes are high in fiber and antioxidants.
They are also good for digestion and some say they are helpful if you have a hangover.
This time of year, artichokes are at their peak.
