Amgen heads to Avila Beach

Thursday morning, Amgen will leave Santa Barbara and head north to Avila Beach. But not everyone there is excited for the race being in their town.

Thousands of people are expected to be in Avila Beach for this event and that has at least one business closing its doors for the day.

“I don’t quite understand that. Not only does he have one business in town, he also has two hotels. Do you think he’s notbenefitingfrom this?” said Bill Price, owner of the Hula Hut.

Joe Momma’s Coffee in Avila Beach is not happy with the race being in town and it had a sign posted which has since been taken down.

The sign said, “Closed May 16 all day because of silly (expletive) bike race! Unsafe for our customers or staff! We will reopen Friday May 17 for regular customers, when jerk bike people are gone! No coffee for you silly out-of-town rich people in spandex. Don’t come back! We do love and continue to support our local bike community through contributions to the Bob Jones Trail, bike racks and bike promotion. So you guys always welcome to experience best coffee in county! But, Amgen Tour folks! No coffee for you, ever!”

Price on the other hand, is very excited for the race and the potential business. “I think it’s going to be awesome. I mean having like the Tour de France in your front yard, not having to go anywhere. Get to wait on the people. Everybody is pretty excited I think,” said Price.
