Boy airlifted to hospital after hit and run

Santa Maria police are looking for a driver who hit a 5-year-old boy and then took off shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Cook and Russell streets.

Police said the boy ran into the road and was hit by a car heading east on Cook Street. The boy was airlifted to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital with major injuries.

The vehicle had fled the scene by time officers arrived and it could only be described by a witness as a small brown car similar to a Honda Civic.

If you have any information you are urged to call the Santa Maria Police Department.
