Man pleads not guilty to making threats against a deputy

A 62-year-old man who led deputies on a slow foot pursuit on Highway 101 last Thursday has pleaded not guilty to charges of threats against a peace officer.

Harley Kelly appeared in Santa Maria court Monday for arraignment. Kelly’s court cases are taking place in a Santa Maria courtroom because of his prior arrest in Solvang last year.

Deputy District Attorney Anne Nudson said Kelly also pleaded not guilty to making similar threats against a peace officer in Solvang.

He is now charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor. If he is convicted, his maximum possible sentence is five years and four months in state prison.

He is in jail and his bail is set at $100,000. Kelly’s case was continued until May 6.
