Winemaker’s death ruled a suicide

After a seven month investigation, Santa Barbara police have determined 60-year-old Christopher Marks, a vinter from Santa Ynez Valley, died of a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Police said Wednesday there were troubling personal issues before the time of his death. Investigators believe the .38 caliber revolver used by Marks, was carried out to sea.

Marks’ body was found on the beach below Shoreline Park in Santa Barbara in September of last year.

He had five children, was the owner of Sweeney Canyon Vineyard and was an attorney.

Officers spoke with Marks’ family on March 22 and have since closed the case.
