4-car crash at faulty signal
Oxnard police said a 40car accident sent two injured drivers and two injured children to area hospitals. A fifth person was taken to the hospital because of a medical condition. The accident happened at a faulty signal around 9:30 a.m.
Neighbors called it an accident waiting to happen. They said the lights at the intersection of Ventura and Gonzales Roads haven’t been working properly for days. Police put out stop signs, hoping people would treat it like a four-way stop.
Mario Coletti said he was selling Fast Wax on the corner when he saw an older-model Ford pickup fly through the air after crashing into a white BMW, then those cars skidded into a Ford Flex and a Toyota Sienna van. Coletti said he tried to help keep a woman and child calm until help arrived.
Police said the injuries turned out to be moderate to minor.
The 54-year-old driver of the pickup, Rodolfo Tinoco of Oxnard, was not injured.
Oxnard traffic officers opened the intersection while crews worked to repair the signal.
